A short menu and a room worth sitting in
We cook what is good this week, and we would rather you stayed for another glass than turned the table.
Divergent Kitchen started with a simple frustration: too many menus are written months ahead, then held in place while the produce moves on without them.
So ours is written weekly, around what the growers actually have. Some dishes stay for a season. Some last a fortnight. The lamb has never left.
The room came second, but it matters just as much — low light, soft surfaces, and enough space between tables that you can hear the person across from you.
A short history
Year one
A twenty-seat room on Gertrude Street, open four nights a week.
Year two
The upstairs room opens for private bookings.
Year three
Weekend breakfast begins, and the bar starts running late.
Today
Seven days of trade, one kitchen, and the same short menu.
Three things we hold to
Cook to the season
The menu follows the produce, not the other way round. If it is on, it is good now.
Know the grower
Most of what we serve comes from within a few hours of the door, bought direct where we can.
Let people linger
We do not turn tables on a timer. The evening is yours once you have sat down.
We are a small team and we cook the way we would want to be fed. If something is not right, tell us while you are here — we would much rather fix it than read about it later.
